The AncientMesoamerica.org site is a site devoted to prehistoric Mesoamerican material culture and investigative archaeological techniques. Under the direction of Dr. Fred Valdez, The University of Texas-Mesoamerica Program has been active with an emphasis on the Maya. Numerous artifacts from the Maya resulting from many seasons of field work are displayed. These artifacts date from the Middle Preclassic (ca. 1000 BC) to the Postclassic (ca. AD 1400). Items of pre-complex society are also shown as are historical artifacts, the latter from early logging days in northwest Belize.
Eccentric flints, ritual tools made of chert/flint, and everyday tools signify the variety of interests of the Mesoamerican past. These artifacts and field photos (excavations, etc.) as well as architecture from both modest homes to the elaborate palaces and temples are presented in a digital archive. This archive is compiled into a useable format offering a unique set of digitized images in 2-D and 3-D in full color, animations, and much supplemental information. This site provides a dynamic archaeological resource invaluable to students, educators, and anyone interested in Mesoamerican Archaeology.
